I believe a good designer is always a great collaborator. It is essential to understand and argue business needs, consider and negotiate marketing aspirations, listen and compromise tech constraints, and, invite and listen to user needs. All these skills + a few more make designers good candidates for product leadership roles; and each designer should aspire to reach that role.
